Ancient Village or Settlement in Tunisia

Phoenician or Punic town dating back to 1101 BCE and rival of Carthage, which was founded nealry 300 years later. Utica helped the romans against the carthaginians and then became a Roman town. There are some Roman remains that have survived quarrying and parts of a Punic necropolis. The river and port silted up in late antiquity, which led to the town being abandoned. Museum at site, while other artifacts in the Bardo Museum.

Excavations campaign in Utica reveals details of life of early Phoenicians.
News item resourced by coldrum.

Tunisia continues to give a special interest to its many archaeological sites. “Utique” (Utica) located some 30 km north of Tunis in the governorate of Bizerta, is witnessing anew excavations campaign. This program is part of agreements on scientific cooperation signed between the National Heritage Institute (INP), and the Universities of Oxford, the Sorbonne and the Institute of Phoenician studies in Madrid, Spain.

The campaign coincides with a joint project initiated between the INP and the Agency for development and promotion of cultural heritage, to preserve Utica’s archaeological site. After the completion of the technical studies, a new museum will be built expanding over 390 square meters. The new museum will allow visitors to discover the different components of the site of Utica as well as retrieving precious information on the life of the early Phoenicians.
