Round Barrow(s) in Lower Saxony, Bremen
This tumulus was not recognized as such until 1961. Excavations at that time proved that the hill, initially considered a natural elevation, is a tumulus. A well-preserved stone battle axe was even found.
From the nearby Trochel estate, the tumulus was used for hunting in the past, and all hunters used to gather there to blow the horn (this explains the flattened dome of the tumulus). The riflemen and athletes from Brockel have also used the tumulus and its surroundings for celebrations, and church services are sometimes still celebrated here today. The name of the tumulus is derived from the amusements around it - 'Lustberg': 'amusement/pleasure hill'.
A local legend that grew up around the tumulus is also very interesting. The information board next to the tumulus reports the following:
In the past, Trochel was an aristocratic court with magnificent buildings and a park. Only the administration building, which was inhabited by the forester, and the remains of the park still bear witness to the former glory. The noble estate once belonged to a nobleman who spoiled his only son. The son held orgies, and playing cards and dice were his great delights. His parents realized too late what they had done and therefore married him to a kind-hearted wife. One day in November there was another wild feast. His wife had already gone to sleep, but the drunken host asked her to join the party. However, she firmly refused. In his anger, he raised his riding crop and hit the wife's head, who then fell back on the bed. After that, he hurried back to his drunken companions. Toward morning, after the wild night, he finally finds his wife dead in bed. But he hadn't wanted to become a murderer. So he hitched up his carriage one last time to see his lands one last time. He then ended his life on the 'Lustberg'. There he was found by his servants.
Since then, the ghostly carriage is said to be seen driving through the old forest paths in November. If snow has already fallen in November, you should even be able to see a trail of blood that extends to the former moat of the former estate - the way by which the servants carried back their dead master. Some people even say they saw a carriage with four white horses driven by a servant with the bleeding corpse in the back.
