Round Barrow in Norway. This huge burial mound is a beauty!! This one and the ones on Øyem in Namdalen is perhaps the most prettiest barrows I have been so far.
It is located about 60 metres north-east of the church on Ørland Church, inside a small grazing field for cows, with electrical fences surrounding the field. It is no problem to see and photograph the mound since there is a total absence of trees in the field.
The mound itself is about 50-60 metres across and from 6-7 metres in height. It has a beautiful shape and a almost perfect round top and clear edges.
The mound is locally called "Skjeggehaugen" after a local chieftain mentioned in the norse kings sagas by Snorre Sturlasson during the 1200s. Jerskjegge (the nickname means "iron beard" in norse) was a local chieftain in the viking area refusing to take up christianity when King Olav Tryggvasson was trying to force christianity on the population in Trøndelag.
Jernskjegge refused and was executed. But if the mound is truly made for this character is probably not true. Even so, ancient tales and sagas surrounding ancient sites is always interesting.
