I visited this in 1997, just as it was closing, and there was nobody there. A very eerie and atmospheric walk around this amazing area, just before sunset. The Castellu (Castle) of granite, is quite stunning. Corsica is truly 'God's country'.

As you say, Nicola, "...so beautiful, its hard to describe".

The castellu di Cucuruzzu is in an area of Corsica called The Alta Rocca. Its a fabulous 700m high basin, surrounded by majestic mountains; the Aiguilles de Bavella, Monte Incudine 2136m, and the Hospitale region to the east.
There is a carpark 20 mins from the site, and a small kiosk where you pay a couple of euros to visit.
There are also many trails through ancient trees, and past abandoned fields, from the villages of the region.
The castellu is the remains of a Torreen village and dates from 1400bc. It is very well preserved. The walk down from the kiosk is very beautiful, and the first view of the castellu takes your breath away.
The walls are still high, and stairs in the wall take you up into the Castellu. The castellu makes use of the massive granite taffoni rocks, which are an integrel part of the construction. There are chambers, and store rooms. The torre still has its roof, covered over with massive granite blocks.
The view from the top is an amazing, looking out to the most beautiful of all Corsican mountains, the aiguilles de Bavella, across a sea of woodland. It is so beautiful, its hard to describe.
