Peter Swyns atonement stone was moved here from the murder place in Lehe and set in front of his gravestone. The contrasts in the carvings are stunning: An angel on the lying gravestone, and Our Saviour and the murder scene on the upright atonement stone.
The habit of setting atonement stones was widespread in Europe in the late Middle Ages. The erection of an atonement stone was part of the atonement agreement between two hostile parties who in this way evaded a feud. Erected at the crime scene, the stone preserves the memory of an outrageous murder for many generations, and throughout his life, the perpetrator was publicly confronted with his crime. - However, since Peter Swyn was member of the council of the Ditmarscher Republic, his murderer was caught and killed, and the stone was set by his daughter.
Four atonement stones have been preserved in Dithmarschen. In addition to this stone from 1530 called the Swyn-Stele, there is the Pferdekrug Suehnestein, the Klaas-Stein in Schalkholz, and the Frens-Stein in Heide.
