The earthwork of Müsleringen was discovered by aerial archaeology in 2008. It was recognized from crop marks in a field in Müsleringen, which is a part of the city of Stolzenau (Lower Saxony, Germany).
Subsequent partial excavations between 2009 and 2013 described the enclosure in more detail. Discovered pieces of charcoal were analyzed by radiocarbon dating and suggested that the earthwork was constructed between 5000 and 4000 BC.
Geomagnetic measurements showed, that the enclosure had a semicircular shape and a diamter of about 200m. It exhibits two trenches. The outer trench is 2.2m deep and 5m broad, while the inner trench is 3m broad. The trenches are disrupted by six earth bridges. There is a possibility, that also timber posts had been installed near the trenches.
The function of this earthwork is unknown. The archaeologists could not find traces of Neolithic houses within the earthwork. The discovered pieces of Neolithic pottery within the trenches might rather point to a ritual place than a settlement.
It is not clear, who built this earthwork. It was situated within the supposed border region between the Funnelbeaker culture and Michelsberg culture and the finds exhibit influences of both cultures.
