Rock Cut Tomb in Sardinia (Sardegna)
The Phoenician-Punic necropolis, the largest of the Mediterranean, dates from the 6th to the 3rd century BC, through excavation of tombs in limestone rock, predominantly of the well type and with a depth varying from 8 to 3 m. The great archaeological interest of the necropolis of Tuvixeddu lies in its ability to document a tradition of Northern-African matrix painting.
In the following centuries the necropolis was further expanded to the slopes of the hill, where the Romans dug monumental tombs. You can also see a section of the Roman aqueduct, from the 2nd century AD, excavated in the rock.
