Protonuraghe or archaic nuraghe in Sardinia (Sardegna)

This circular-shaped monument might not be spectacular nowadays, but it is considered as a milestone in the Nuragic architecture and chronology. The pottery of Monte Claro culture discovered inside its chamber allows do date Sa Corona for 2000 – 1700 BC, which puts it roughly 200 years before the tholos nuraghi. On the other hand, it has a circular shape, large chamber and no corridor typical for the contemporaneous protonuraghi. It is very likely, that the tholos nuraghi derive from Sa Corona type of construction.

The monument has 11.70-10.30 m of overall diameter, the chamber has 6.30 m of diameter. The masonry consists of large unworked stone block which are not laid in courses. From this point you can see the sites of Nuraghe Monte Leonaxi (at the west) and Nuraghe Serra Cannigas (at the south).

The reach Protonuraghe Sa Corona you have to follow the dirty road from Villagreca and drive past the farm on your left – the monument is located on the natural rocks which you can see behind it.
