Palcho Monastery is located above the Tibetan town of Gyantze. It dates back to the ninth century AD when Pelkor-tsen founded it and after whom it is named. The main temple - the Tsuklakhang was built between 1418 and 1428. During the cultural revolution Red Guards destroyed ten of the temples although three, including the amazing Kumbun circular temple built in 1427 were protected by the intervention of senior persons. Walls above the temple and the nearby fort defended the area. The fort was the scene of a seige by the British Younghusband Expeditionary force in 1904.
