Ancient Temple in Sri Lanka
The Koneswaram Kovil (temple) in Trincomalee is one of the oldest and most important Shiva temples in Sri Lanka. It was founded in the 3rd century CE. In legends it was called "The temple with the thousand pillars". In the 17th century CE (1622-1624) it was destroyed by the Portuguese. In 1632 it was rebuilt with its original idols. In the 1970´s Chola bronzes and unterwater ruins of the ancient temple were discovered by archaeologists and Arthur C. Clarke. Today only the newer buildings could be visited. Some ancient small caves and idols are exhibited.
