The largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka, founded in the 1st century BCE.

The Dambula Cave temple is a UNESCO World Heritage site. It is the largest and best-preserved cave temple complex in Sri Lanka. It was founded in the 1st century BCE.
There are more than 80 caves in the surrounding area. The main 5 caves, are containing statues and paintings of Buddha and his life. There are more than 153 Buddha statues. The latter include two statues of Hindu gods, the god Vishnu and the god Ganesh.
These cave complexes were inhabited before the arrival of Buddhism in Sri Lanka. There are burial sites with human skeletons about 2700 years old in this area, at Ibbankatuwa near the Dambulla cave complexes.

There are also ancient wooden statues of Buddha and gods & goddesses. All are set against wonderfully detailed wall and roof paintings which stretch over many centuries.
