Anuradhapura is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. It is a UNSECO World Heritage site. The earliest evidences of human settlement are showing artifacts of the 8.-7. century BCE. Many monasteries and stupas were built in the later centuries. Many Buddhist scholars from all over the world visited it. It was one of the most important religious sites in Sri Lanka and the 1st royal residence in Sri Lanka. The most important site in the town is the Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi tree. It is a scion of the original Bodhi tree from northern India, which came in the 3rd century BCE to the Island by pilgrims.
