Barumini Nuraghe
Barumini Nuraghe submitted by Bjorn : This is probably the most famous nuraghe in Sardinia. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Nuraghe in Sardegna.
This nuraghe and associated village is so big that it is thought to have been a regional hub for a number of nuragic villages. The site dates back to the Middle Bronze Age around 3300 to 3400 years ago. It was rediscovered in modern times when a large hill outside Barumini was excavated and the remains uncovered. The site comprises a nuragic village of around 200 huts and associated buildings and the nuraghe itself.

The village has many round house foundations still in place, some of the houses have items like mortar and grinding stones for grinding wheat, stone tubs, one at least has a large stone bath, another has a small circular area with bench seats around a central fountain. One large building called the Meeting House has a bench around its inner perimeter and is interpreted as a place where elders met. The Nuraghe has a central tower with four surrounding towers, the top of the central tower having collapsed in antiquity but once reached 20 metres in height. The four surrounding towers are accessed from a central courtyard where a 20 metre deep well supplied the nuraghe. In the Late Bronze Age a three metre thick curtain wall was erected around the towers to strengthen the site and towards the end of that era a further outer defense wall with seven towers was constructed perhaps due to the risk of Phoenician invasion.

In 1997 the site was declared a UNESCO Patrimony of Humanity site: http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/833/documents/.

Finds are in the Cagliari and Villanovaforru museums. The site is on the outskirts of Barumini and well signposted as it is a major tourist destination nowadays. There is a large car park by the shop and ticket office. It is necessary to take a guided tour - in October 2010 they went on the hour each hour, cost €8.00 for just the site and a little more to include the museum.
