The Piepenkopf is a hillfort in Dörentrup (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). The enclosure dates from the La Tène period of the Pre-Roman Iron Age. Radiocarbon dating and discovered pieces of pottery indicate, that the enclosure was built in ca. 250 BC.
The hillfort is situated on Kleeberg hill. The hill top is surrounded by a triangular rampart/ditch system, which was fortified with a dry stone wall. The eastern part was secured by an additional rampart and a ditch. The northern part lies directly at a steep valley and was only additionally secured by a palisade. The central enclosure measures 7 ha. This area also includes a well for the supply with fresh water and terraces that could have been used as meadows for cattle.
It is assumed that Piepenkopf was used at the same time as the nearby Amelungsburg hillfort, which is situated on a hill with the same name. Therefore, it is possible, that both hillforts formed a disconnected fortification system. Sometimes the Piepenkopf hillfort itself is called Amelungsburg or Hameleburg.
The excavations indicate, that the Piepenkopf hillfort was burned down and was not rebuilt again.
