Cup marked rocks in Tessin

Cup marked rocks near San Zeno Oratory.

To the north of the San Zeno Oratory there is a rock of 2,4 m x 1,2 m surface with 60 cups. The stone is weathered. The cups have diameters between 2 and 14 cm.

To the south, there is a rock of 5,4 m x 1,7 m surface with 13 cups. This stone is less weathered than the northern one. The cups have diameters between 2 and 10 cm.

Reference: Urs Schwegler, Schalen- und Zeichensteine der Schweiz, Basel 1992 (cup stones and character stones of Switzerland, Basle 1992).

This cult place shows the presence of men as early as 3000 years BC, others claim 6000 years BC.

Reference: Claudio Andretta, Orte der Kraft im Tessin, CH-Aarau 2015, p. 224 ff. and Binda Franco, Archeologia rupestre nella Svizzera italiana, 1996, referred to by Claudio Andretta.

To get there, you can take the easy and large hiking path from Origlio (c. 30 min.). Or the mountain hiking path from Lamone, if you walk safely in the mountains. Time required c. 50 minutes.
