South of the Ufenau island (the largest island of Switzerland) archaeologists found evidences of lake dwellings of the 14.-13. century BCE. In Gallo-Roman times a temple was built on the island.

Ufnau Island - a view into its long history

Together with the smaller Lützelau Island, Ufnau lies in the area of Neolithic pile dwelling settlements between Rapperswil, Hurden, Pfäffikon and Freienbach.

2/3rd century CE: Gallo-Roman Temple at the location of the later parish church St. Peter and Paul. The Gallo-Roman Temple had a cella and a gallery. The cella measured 5,7 x 5,7 meters, the gallery 18 x 18 meters. The gallery had wooden columns and was roofed. (1) Above the entrance door of today’s Christian St. Peter and Paul Church is the symbol of a Celtic cross modelled.

7th century CE: Early medieval St. Martin's Church as the first predecessor of today's St. Martin's Chapel.

741 CE: First documentary mention of the island of "Hupinauia".

965: Emperor Otto the Great donates the Ufnau, which he traded from Säckingen, to the Monastery of Einsiedeln.

973: Alleged year of death of the island saint St. Adalrich.

1927: The island is placed under nature protection.

1958/59: Restauration of St. Peter and Paul Church together with archaeological search. Discovery of the Gallo-Roman Temple.

1964/65: Restauration of St. Martin’s Chapel, together with archaeological search. (2)

Still today, the island is in the private property of the Einsiedeln Monastery. It is open to the public. Access by Public Transport boat or private boat.
