Natural Feature in Norway

Large area of pottholes created by last iced age! Very special!!!! About 15 km from mainroad 41. Discovered in 1951/52. There is a gravel road now, but only a few years ago area was only accessable by a long walk. The rocks are grinded and feel like velvet; nowadays site is used as a sort of public bath and can be very crowded on warm summer days. There is even a parking lot now and a fee has to be paid (Bom). Area had settlements in Bronce Age and Iron Age. There were some rock carvings, but nobody cared for them, so they unfortunately vanished! Visible are still a few Iron Age barrows near Fjone a bit way up north at Lake Nisser. Worth a visit!!! Don't forget your camera!!

This really is an area where Ambience "5" is very suitable. Had a chance to enjoy the Nisser area in 1988.
What rock art site vanished? The two rock art sites at Lake Nisser (Fjone and Trontveit) are still there, but only accessible by boat.

Yes, the area is fantastic, but unfortunately the rock carvings are not visible anymore. I know, especially Kvithamar was only to see by boat! Used to live 10 years partwise at Lake Nisser between Treungen and Fjone. Next time I will be back I will take pix of the Iron Age Barrows.
    Good Night

Thank you very much for info, although i am surprised. According to the depictions (Gustaf Hallström, Monumental art of northern Europe from the Stone Age 1, The Norwegian localities, 1938) the painitings were very faint, but still visible. I guess I also remember some more recent photos of the sites in some rock art journal, but this was in the 1990s and I cannot recall the details. Would be very sad if the paintings are completely lost. Were you able to visit these two rock painting sites (Ovnen at Trontveit and Kvithammeren at Fjone)? I did not managed to do this in 1988.
