Barrow Cemetery in Aust-Agder
This beautiful and well preserved barrow cemetery is located in a small forest on a natural plateau called Mjølhusmoen. The cemetery is inside the small village called Mjølhus and is surrounded by grassy felds and some private houses. The plateau is triangular shaped with most of the barrows found on a line on the south east side of the forest. A small road cuts trough the cemetery on the east side. The largest barrow is located more to the south west close to a local church and not inside the cemetery itself.
All of the barrows have large pine trees growing on them but there is very little undergrowth and the barrows are mostly covered only with short grass and moss, making the barrows easy to see. There are some old descriptions of three standing stones and one rune stone at the cemetery but it is not possible to confirm if they were ever here.
The largest barrow in the cemetery has a diameter of 20 metres and a height of around 2 metres. Three of the barrows are around 18 metres in diameter and from 1,8 to 2,2 metres in height. The smallest barrow is around 10 metres in diameter and 1 metre in height and the rest have a diameter of around 12-15 metres. Most of the barrows have clear ditches around the outer edges and making them even easier to see.
The barrow outside the cemetery and the plateau is located more to the south west and is close to a church and a small sport area. It also has some large trees growing on it and a deep ditch around it. It has a diameter of 30 metres and around 4 metres in height and has a very nice shape.
