Bronzezeithaus in Hartwarderwurp submitted by AlexHunger : Site in Lower Saxony, Germany: reconstruction of bronze age Longhouse. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient Village or Settlement in Lower Saxony, Bremen

Reconstruction of Bronze age long house dating to about 900 BCE using tradional methods, such as Wattle and daub and thatched roof.

The original settlement was discovered 2 Meters underground 150 Meters to the nort accross the drainage canal. In the bronze age, sea levels were significanty lower and the original inhabitants are believed to have left the houses in a hurry during a flood as the settlement was never revived. About 3 houses were found, and after excavation, the site was covered up again to protect it. It is now pasture land again.

The inhabitants lived on one end of the house, and the cows at the other lower end of the house. It was slanted by a few degrees to keep the excrement away from the human inhabitants.

The reconstructed house is now only 1.5 meters above sea level and the entire regiion is protected by dykes. The reconstruction was funded with EU money, the 4 local communities and donations from businesses, such as the the local Thatcher.

An ancient bread oven has also been reconstructed.

The house is open as a museum mostly 11:00 to 17:00 on Sundays and for groups upon request during the rest of the week.

Bronzezeithaus in Hartwarderwurp - Ancient Wedding Ceremony submitted by Klingon : The Celtic Handfasting ceremony, where the Shaman wraps the wrists of the couple with a leather band, was used for marriages in Ireland from the Bronze Age until well into the christian age. It was also used in ancient Persia by the Farsi. Maybe something similar also existed in Northern Germany? (Vote or comment on this photo)

Bronzezeithaus in Hartwarderwurp submitted by AlexHunger : Site in Lower Saxony, Germany: Reconstruction of bronze age Longhouse. Reconstructed Bread Oven, which is used for demonstrations. The oven door was hermitically sealed wwith left over dough. The bread rivaled anything from a modern bakery. The locals demonstrate arts and crafts and sell local products for a little atmosphere and for educational purposes.
