Hillfort in Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg
The Tinnumburg (on Sölring: 'Borig') is a rampart system near the Tinnum district of the Sylt municipality in Schleswig-Holstein.
While the Archsum hillfort was destroyed and the Rantum hillfort lies buried under dunes, it is the best preserved of the three Sylt hillforts. In the north-west it is bordered by a tidal creek flowing into the Wadden Sea, in the south-east by the flat marsh. Possibly the tidal creek and the Döplem - a lake next to the hillfort - were navigable in the Viking Age, giving the hillfort access to the sea. In the east, the hillfort was connected to the land by a land bridge.
The hillfort was built around the birth of Christ. The ring wall has a diameter of 120 meters. The wall is up to seven meters high and has a circumference of around 440 meters. The base of the hillfort is about two meters above sea level. Before the marching dike in 1938, the hillfort protruded like an island out of the water during storm surges. The hillfort had at least two gates (on the east and south). Perhaps it had a third gate to the west, leading to a small plateau at Döplem.
Excavations in 1870, 1948 and 1976 provided evidence that the Tinnumburg belonged to the circular ramparts built in the early Roman Empire time on the North Frisian Islands. The excavation results showed that this was a Germanic place of worship. It was used again in the 8th to 10th centuries, after lying fallow and bog for a time. The interior buildings consisted of sod wall houses. The rampart visible today, which was erected over the rampart from around the time of Christ's birth, also dates from this period.
The same old Lembecksburg on Föhr brought comparable finds to the Tinnumburg.
