Standing Stone (Menhir) in Aargau

Over 4 meter high and 1.9 meter wide standing stone erected during the construction of the nearby Autobahn.

The stone was uncovered along with two other large blocks during the construction of the A1 motorway between 1969 and 1971. There is strong evidence that the menhir actually served as a bridge over a system of irrigation ditches that were built in 1648, and the two large accompanying stones were part of the irrigation ditch wall.

However, there is also the possibility that before its use as a bridge, the stone had indeed served as a menhir, due to its alignment with several other megalithic and religious structures in the area.

For comparison see Schweizerische Stein-Denkmäler Object Inventar 5436.02 and Ist der Menhir von Würenlos AG echt? (In German)
