Sculptured Stone in Piemonte

Many of the paths I enjoy walking as a tourist on the Alps are ancient routes that people followed during the summer migrations towards higher pastures. I look up to enjoy the beautiful views the Alps have to offer, but I'm also trying to look down more often, as I'm learning that those old routes are like pages of a huge and very rich history book.
One good example is the path from La Valletta (a rock climbing spot with a car park, near Crevoladossola, Province of Verbano-Cusio-Ossola) to Alpe La Prasca. The first sign from the past comes at 40 min. into the walk, on the right side of the path, it's a stone marked with a central zig-zag-like incision.
Less than ten minutes later the woodland opens up and a rocky terrace offers a panoramic view, there the stones are marked with several Christian crosses.
At the final destination, passed the very few houses in Alpe La Prasca, the highest viewing point over Domodossola and its valley is marked by a little cross, but it's on the biggest boulder to the left of that spot that I like to sit. Its central surface is covered in cup marks of different dimensions, the first few follow a descending straight line, one after the other, then they are spread out in two little groups. More cups are carved on the lower tip of the boulder. Of course I'm no expert and I've been told this could be a very ancient site or simply a boulder eroded by rain and snow. I checked similar stones nearby, I didn't see the same cup marks on them. Maybe there's a clear cut way to distinguish natural and artificial, I do not know.
