Standing Stones in Norway
This site consists of three beautiful large standing stones, three smaller barrow mounds and a large burial cairn on the island of Aspa high above the Freifjord.
The two largest standing stones is located on the bottom of a large ravine running northeast-southwest with a flat grassy field in the bottom of the ravine. The largest stone is in the middle of this field, and the second largest to the southwest edge, just below some steep hills. On on of the hills, on a small and flat plateau is a large burial cairn.
The third stone and three long barrows and one round barrow is on the top of the west part of the ravine alone a country road leading to some homes. They are located inside a grazing field for cows. The standing stone is inside a horse fence with electrical fences so I didnt dare go inside this fence, I had to photograph at some distance.
This site has originally contained two more standing stones, more barrows and a housing foundation. Sadly these artifacts have been erased in modern times by farming activity.
The tallest standing stone is almost 6 metres in height and about 40-50cm wide. It has a very nice rounded shape, almost oval across and looks like a column. It is tilting a little.
The second largest stone is about 1,7 metres tall, about 40cm wide and have a triangular cross-section. It is just below the hills of the ravine to the south-west.
The third stone is about 1.5 metres in height and about 50cm wide, it is shaped as a long and thin slab. It was impossible to come close enough for a good photo.
The cairn in the edge of the ravine is about 20 metres across and about 0,5 metres in height.
Along the country road to the west of the site, on top of the ridge is three barrow mounds, two elongated ones and one round. They are about 10-12 metres in length and about 1-2 metres high.
The site has a very beautiful view over the Freifjord and the neighbor islands and mountains.
