“Alte Kapelle” (“Old Chapel”) is the historic name of a neolithic passage grave situated in former moorland East of Wahnbek.
The site was heavily damaged in 1902 (!) when at least (the) two capstones and several orthostats were robbed to erect a monument for Grossherzog Nicolaus Friedrich Peter in Rastede.

In historic times the site became overgrown by moorland hence its ruin nowadays lies in a 1m deep pit (inside a pasture). To prevent further damages it was recently fenced off.
The remaining stones are at least halfway embedded into the ground so it is difficult to spot them within the growing season when long grasses partly hide them.

Preserved in situ are four chamber- and one passage-orthostat [1].

Passage orthostat:
oriented NE-SW, length is 80cm (all my measurings are only approx.) at SW long side

SW long side:
one orthostat (110cm x 70cm, visible height 60cm), adjacent to the remaining passage orthostat

SE narrow side:
one deeply embedded orthostat (60cm x 40 cm, visible height 30cm) most probably marking the south-eastern chamber end

NE long side:
One orthostat (80cm x 60cm, visible height 75cm) located opposite of the remaining one in the SW. So it is possible to determine the clear width of the chamber at its centre: 210cm
Another orthostat to the SE of the latter (90cm x 50cm, visible height 40cm)

Furthermore there are some smaller and four larger stones with unknown purpose, as they obviously are not in situ:
1?: 70cm x 50cm visible height 40cm
2?: 90cm x 60cm visible height 70cm, with drill-hole (for blasting)
3?: 65cm x 40cm, visible height 30cm
4?: 50cm x 50xm, visible height 20cm

As the NW narrow side is lost the original length cannot be exactly determined without data from excavation. Assuming the passage was located at the centre of the SW longside, the chamber had a length of approx. 6m (4- 4,5m clear) and was covered by two or three capstones.

Access (visits in 2007/2008/2009):
The site is located North of a road not allowed for public traffic. It can be reached by a 500m walk. It is not signposted, wellies were useful to cross the pasture.
