The tombs' partial destruction happened in 1860, when it was blown-up to use the stones for building up the basement of a new farmhouse for Herringhaus family 750m North of the site (In general this unfortunately was a common practice in the 19th century causing an approximate loss of over 90% of all megalithic sites in North- and North-west Germany.)
In 1887/88 the damaged site was examined by Professor F. J. Jostes et al.. He discovered significant remains of the chamber: one capstone and 13 orthostats. Furthermore parts of chambers' pavement built of flat limestone, vestiges of the dry-walling (sealing between the megaliths) and ceramic (Tiefstichkeramik). Nevertheless, the original ground-plan could not be clarified. Guessing from the size of the barrow it could have been a 5 or 6 capstone chamber.
Except for the one megalith partly sticking out of it, the other megaliths found by Jostes are possibly covered inside the barrows' remains. However I could not find any reference for their whereabouts. Additional information by someone familiar with (this) details is greatly appreciated.
The site is not signposted (April 2012), but there is an info-panel beside it. The immediate surroundings of the site have recently been deforested.
