Round Barrows in Vest-Agder

Pjolterhaugen are two round barrows located in a small park between the university of Kristiansand and the Oddernes church. The park has a small lawn with some larger trees and the barrows are on the lawn with a information sign and some higher grass growing on top. The name Pjolterhaugen is from a regiment of soldiers were stationed here built a small pavillion on top of the barrow. The pavillion has later been removed.

The original barrow cemetery once located here contained more than 100 barrows and a unknown number of standing stones according to a script from around 1700. It also contained the Oddernes runestone (described in another site). The other barrow monuments have been lost in later years because of construction activity and the park is today surrounded by houses and university buildings.

The Pjolterhaugen barrow is 22 metres in diameter and around 3 metres in height. The smaller barrow next to it is around 14 metres in diameter and around 1,5 metres in height. They are overgrown with high grass and some large trees but are easily visible.
