Sravanabelagola, which means the Monk of the White Pond, is one of the oldest and most important Jain pilgrimage centers in India, and the site of the 17.5 m high naked statue of Gomateshvara, a Jain deity.

The statue was carved out of a single peice of granite in AD 981. Depicting the son of a great emperor and the first Jain teacher, legend describes how he renounced worldly wealth and withdrew to the forest where he meditated in complete stillness until he attained enlightenment. One notices vines curling around his legs, a sign of complete detachment. Access is via 614 rock - cut steps and no shoes are allowed!
