This is a site with 3 large standing stones from the iron age. This site has been constructed as a memorial site for the battle at Kalvskinnet in the year 955CE.
The battle itself was between the sons of the king Eirik bloodaxe and the king Håkon The Good over how was entitled to be king of Norway. The battle ended with victory for king Håkon. King Håkon the good were later killed in another battle. This battle have been well described in the norse kings sagas by Snorre Sturlasson. During this battle, there was a local chieftain called Egil ullserk (wool shirt), that due to brilliant tactics was an important reason why King Håkon won this battle. Egil Ullserk died in this conflict and it is written in the sagas that tall standing stones mark his grave.
It is believed that the tallest standing stone of these 3 stones belonged to the original grave of Egil ullserk, but this is impossible to know for certain. The two other smaller stones have been moved to this spot from Bolga and Endreset in 1955 when this site was constructed as a part of the 1000 year anniversary for the battle.
Around this site and at the church below it is several signposts telling the history of and around the happenings in 955.
Today the site appear almost like a modern memorial site, but we know the standing stones themselves originate from the iron age.
The tallest stone believed to be from Egils grave is about 5 metres tall, and from 20 to 30cm thick. The shape is long and slender. Another stone is 3 metres in height and from 40-50cm wide and about 20cm thick, like a slender standing slab, and the third is 2,5 metres tall, about 50cm wide and 30cm thick.
The site has a beautiful view over Freifjord and the islands and mountains in and around the fjord.
