Sculptured Stone in Møre og Romsdal
The Horga altar or Alterteiga as it is locally called is located far from the nearest house or farm, it is located inside a tight forest in a steep hill going north up to the small mountain called Horga. (The name Horga in Norse means altar or place of worship.)
The altar has many similarities with similar places like the devils gambling table at Nøtterøy, the altar at Jonsås in Larvik and at Rossland in Rogaland, however the difference at this site is that the altar is located in a mountain slope and it is probably the reason why the construction is located on top of several flat stone slabs. Maybe to level the altar itself?
The stone altar is easily visible in the terrain. It has almost parallel sides with a small shelf or flat square in the north-east part. In the bottom there are three almost similar stone slabs located parallel on top of each other. These stone slabs are around 2 metres in length, around 1 metre wide and around 35cm thick. On top of the top slab there are three smaller rocks and on top of these rocks are a large flat cubical shaped boulder. The south-west part of this boulder is almost parallel with the bottom slabs south-west sides.
The stone block measures around 1,30metres in length, 1,1 metres wide and around 80cm in height. On the top surface of the boulder is a deep cut or hole, around 15cm deep and oriented east-west.
The site is surrounded by birch and pine tree forest, it would have been a great view to the valley to the south if there was no trees. To get to the altar visitors have to drive to the end of a really bad country road and then follow a footpath to the altar.
