Re: Laufen Dolmen by Megalithic89 on Saturday, 26 June 2021

A first dolmen’s grave was discovered in 1946 on Wahlenstrasse and subsequently uncovered by Alban Gerster. The tomb still consisted of several parts of large limestone slabs. In addition to a few bone fragments, 121 human teeth were found from around 24 adults and 8 children. Special burial items such as weapons or jewellery were missing. In February 2000, an excavator guide uncovered a 2.90 × 1.70 metre limestone slab about 120 metres to the southeast. A passer-by notified the cantonal archaeology, which immediately moved out and quickly realized that it was indeed a second Neolithic dolmen’s grave. The slab was a side wall that collapsed in Roman times when the burial grounds were plundered and was abandoned. The remaining stone slabs were probably used for the construction of the nearby Roman villa of Laufen-Müschhag. (…) Such burial facilities are typical of the late Neolithic period. (…) Measuring the amount of radiation remaining from the radioactive carbon isotope 14C allows the bones to be dated to around 2900 BC.
