The finds include pieces of decorated pottery, stone axes as well as different types of microliths, that could have been used as arrowheads, blades and scapers, respectively.
One interesting aspect about several of the micoliths and stone axes is that they consist of material that can not be found in this area and therefore had to be imported. The microliths include flintstones from the Maas area and Rijckholt, where they are quite common, while they are relatively rare on the east side of the Rhine river. Certain stone axes consist of radiolarite (lydite), which may stem from the Alps region in south Germany.
The import of high-quality materials like Maas flintstones or radiolarite indicate a trading connection of the LBK settlement Kahlenberg to distant places. Even though it is not clear, how exactly the artefacts have reached Kahlenberg, the nearby Hellweg, a known Neolithic trading route, could at least partially have played a role in connecting these European areas in the early Neolithic.
The finds are displayed in the Museum für Vor- und Frühgeschichte in Hagen.
