The megalithic tomb at Rheine-Schotthock seems to be the only one with a largely preserved barrow in the whole of Westphalia.
The tomb's chamber was excavated in 1983.
The preserved length is about 12 metres.
The originally the chamber probably was about 14 m long and about 2 m wide and a height of about 1 m.
It's oriented Northwest-Southeast.
Most probably the kerbstones have been removed long ago.
Also the capstones were not found in 1983.
However most of the supporting stones were preserved, among them a block of 1.3 x 1.3 m that was still in situ.
After the excavation some of the uprights have been brought to Münster for further examinations. The remaining stones became overgrown.
The building material, blocks of sandstone from Teutoburger Wald, were transported at least 11 kilometres.
Smaller limestones from the Rheine area were used as paving-stones as well as for the filling of the interstices of the chamber walls.
Grave findings were some flint artefacts, 2 pieces of copper-adornment and numerous pottery fragments.
This grave goods can be related to the Trichterbecherkultur (Funnel Beaker culture).
Human remains have been found too.
The dead at Rheine were from both sexes and different ages, among them a pregnant woman with her unborn child.
Furthermore the anthropological examination produced some data about the people's physical condition. So for instance spinal diseases and a perfectly healed fracture of a lower jaw were recognisable.
Most probably the burial chamber was used for the comparatively long time of about 350 years.
