Barrow Cemetery in North Rhine-Westphalia. The barrow cemetery at Gysenberger Wald ("Gysenberg wood") is situated between Herne-Sodingen and Bochum-Gerthe. It's located in the southeastern part of the wood, not far from the city boundary between Herne and Bochum.

It was discovered about 1930.

The cemetery still contains of 12 largely preserved round barrows.

The condition of these barrows differs considerably. Meanwhile most of them became rather flat, whereas some of the barrows still have a remaining height of between 1 and 1,5 m (by a very rough guess).
Probably their original height was about 2 metres.

The remaining diameters of the barrows are also considerably differing.
Originally the diameters were possibly about 20 metres.

Due to the barrows' size the cemetery is thought to be older bronze aged (about 1700 - 1200 B.C.).
But without an examination that's just speculation.

During the last years the cemetery was more and more overgrown, with the result that some of the barrows are rather hard to find.

A local tale reports about an ancient pagan king in a golden coffin who had been buried in the centre of the cemetery. His coffin is said to be enclosed with iron rings.
In the older times, at every Good Friday, for several hours a pityful lamentation was coming from the depth.
And during dark and stormy nights sometimes yelling, as well as loudly clashing weapons, were terrifying the farmers in the neighbourhood of the site.
