The well house of the Schwelmer Gesundbrunnen ("Health Well of Schwelm“) lies in Schwelm (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) at the Brunnenstraße ("Well Street“). In the past, its water had the reputation to have healing powers.

People have come to this place for over 1000 years. Based on the finding that neolithic settlers have lived in this area, the story might date even further back.

Several reports describe that patients that had been immobile were able to run again after contact with the water. In order to protect the water of the well against rain, snow or dust, a well house was built in the 17th century. The well house is still present today and represents an octagonal temple. It is made of brick with a slate-covered welscher hood. Schwelm became recognized as a health resort, which made it necessary to build accomodations for the visitors. The best known resort, Haus Friedrichsbad is still standing at Brunnenstraße near the well house. It was build in 1786. In the basement was a large, man-deep swimming pool, which could be filled with water from the well. The water was analysed and found to be rich in iron, sulphur and cabonic acid.

The well ran dry in the 20th century. The reason was most likely the intense mining activity (iron ore and pyrite) in the near Roten Bergen. This changed the flow of the ground water and prevented its exit via the well. The spa guests stayed away. At least Haus Friedrichsbad was able to survive by becoming a conference center and a training center for business professionals.
The well house is still a central point in this district of Schwelm. Many neighbour parties and celebrations take place at this location. This is the reason, why it is now called Nachbarschaft Brunnen ("Neighbourhood Fountain“).

The history of the Gesundbrunnen is presented in the Museum Haus Martfeld in Schwelm.
