Erdenburg submitted by Metallzeitler : The three ramparts and ditches of the hillfort can be seen perfectly in the terrain. (Vote or comment on this photo)
The hillfort Erdenburg („earthen castle“) is located on the hilltop of a small ridge on the edge of the forest Hardt in the east of Bensberg (Rheinisch-Bergischer Kreis). It consists of three concentric ramparts and ditches enclosing an area of 230 x 165 m. Extensive excavations in 1935 showed that the v-shaped ditches were once up to 2 m deep.

The two outer ramparts were fastened by wooden breastworks, although the inner one was consisted by a wood-earth-construction. The only entrance was located on a steep slope to the west of the hilltop and was secured by a sophisticated gate system. In the northeast the ramparts and dichtes are not closed because they where either not completed or this area has been deliberately left open because of the nearby water spring. The pottery fragments which were recovered during the excavation can be dated to the late Latène Period of the Iron Age. However, the 14C-dating of a burnt layer on the sole of a rampart yielded an age of 310 ± 80 BC so that the hillfort may be dated as older.
