Horkenstein
Horkenstein submitted by Harald_Platta : The Horkenstein is a putative ancient sacral stone in Hattingen (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). Orgininally, it was located on a hill in Bochum-Dahlhausen. In 1984 it was placed at its current position in central Hattingen. The photo was taken in November 2016. Please compare it to the older photo by Andreas (Pic ID: 48399) for the altered surrounding area. © Platta 2016 (Vote or comment on this photo)
The Horkenstein or Teufelsstein in Hattingen (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany) is a Neolithic or Bronze Age stone formerly situated at the bank of the river Ruhr in Bochum-Dahlhausen, now displaced at a bus station in Hattingen, a few miles away from his original location.

The stone is about 4 metres long and has a weight of about 20 tons. It displays several cup marks. Moreover, it exhibits a deep man-made furrow.

A legend tells how the devil planned to destroy a nearby church with this stone. But he was fooled. So he overestimated the remaining distance of his journey. Then he resigned and left the stone.
There are some other local legends about the execution of Roman war prisoners and about other human sacrifices at the stone.
A further tale reports about "holy oaks" in the neighbourhood and a ghost, who was visible there at night. But after the stone was brought to Hattingen the spook disappeared.

Horkenstein
Horkenstein submitted by Harald_Platta : This is a photo taken of an information panel displayed in the Stadtmuseum Hattingen. The old picture shows the second localisation of the Horkenstein. While the Horkenstein originally was located on the Grotenberg in (Bochum-)Dahlhausen, it is now in the city center of Hattingen. In between, from 1876 - 1984, it was placed in front of the deanery in (Hattingen-)Winz. It is interesting t... (Vote or comment on this photo)

Horkenstein
Horkenstein submitted by dodomad : Picture posted on the homepage of Holger Vockert. In 2007, the artist Holger Vockert placed a red figure on the Horkenstein. He wanted to bring back the stone to the mind of the people of Hattingen and remind them of the myth as a holy stone. (picture linked to MP by H.Platta)

Horkenstein submitted by Andreas : Copy of the oldest (known) drawing of Horkenstein, made about 1823, including some measurements from that time. The drawing belongs to the collection of Hattingen's municipal archive. The copy is recently (until December) displayed at "Bügeleisenhaus" Hattingen.

N 51.39782 / E 7.17994 will lead you more easily to the Horkenstein.

The Horkensteinweg still exists in Bochum-Dahlhausen. From there you have a wonderful view onto the river Ruhr. One of my favorite spots in Bochum!

The coordinates kindly submitted by Mr. Breuer seem to mark a very large crossroads. Certainly this cannot be the accurate position? May someone have a look? Thanks.

There is a bus station just to the SE of the crossroads and the photos show two roads so it matches the description in the text

I was just wondering about the marker pointing right on crossroads' three-laned carriageway (according to the googlemap-link). But you are right Horkenstein seems to be just NW of this position at the edge of the crossroads.

As far as I remember the difference between the position shown on the map and the real position seems to be just about 5 meters.
But without this helpful difference I surely would have been flattened by the traffic.
