Barrow Cemetery in Møre og Romsdal
Sandvikshagen is the largest barrow cemetery in the county of Møre og Romsdal. The barrow cemetery is consisting of 143 barrows, mainly small burial cairns. When I visited the site it was a little disappointing. Most of the cemetery is located in a very tight leaf tree forest with large and small leaf trees, another part has almost turned into a bog over the years and the ground is very wet. Another part is inside a very tight fur tree forest, this is where I could find most of the cairns since it is very little forest floor vegetation. The cairns are visible as small mounds of rocks.
10 of the cairns are large, around 10 to 15 metres in diameter and around 1 to 1,5 metres in height, they all have craters on top. Almost all of the cemetery consists of smaller cairns around 2 to 5 metres in diameter and around 0,2 to 0,5 metres in height, along with some elongated cairns.
No archaeological investigations have been taken place at the site, it is not known any findings from the site either so it is difficult to get a exact dating of the site, but it is believed to be from late bronze age to the early iron age, around 500BC to 1000AD. The site extends over several properties, but years ago it was one large property, this is probably the case also in the iron age and the cemetery probably belonged to a large settlement.
