The earthwork was discovered in 1882 and identified as Neolithic about 100 years later. The ramparts might have surrounded an area of 15 – 20 ha. Originally, the ramparts were 3 m high and the surrounding ditch was 1.5 m deep. At least certain parts were fortified with timber posts that might have had an additional hight of 1.5 m – 2 m. A layer of charcoal indicates that the first version of the earhwork had been destroyed ca. 4100 BC, before it was rebuilt shortly afterwarts.
The function of the earthwork Venusberg is not known. There are no well documeted finds from the inside of the enclosure available.
The Venusberg site is one of the very few Neolithic earthworks that are still relativeley well preserved. Today, the ramparts still have a hight of 1.5 m - 1.8 m and a length of 140 m.
