The Monument for a Forgotten Future measures 10 x 16.5 x 9 m and has a weight of 132 tonnes, making a big impression on the visitor. This is not only because of the impressive size of the object. Such big rock formations are seldom found in this area and therefore represent an uncommon encounter for the visitor. Therefore, it has been called an "unnatural natural phenomenon".
Concerning the construction type, the monument is not a natural stone. The Monument for a Forgotten Future was first constructed as a steel skeleton and then equipped with a concrete cover.
The work plays with several paradoxes and contrasts. It is not a common monument that refers to a past event but one that relates to a "forgotten" future. The rock as an element of the Joshua Tree National Park is now introduced to the green belt of the Emscher Landschaftspark. The intention of the national parks is to protect nature and wilderness, while the intention of the Emscher Landschaftsparks project is to revitalize the landscape that had been destroyed by the industry. In both cases, it is man who wants to shape the landscape. The idea of introducing an element of one park in another park offers additional, synergistic perspectives concerning landscape, nature and art. Since the Ruhr area was mainly industrial for a long time, the landscape has to be re-shaped again. However, such a renaturation would not have been necessary if the consequences of the industrialization had been calculated better. For this reason, the Monument for a Forgotten Future might point to the fact that any action sooner or later necessarily has consequences. Moreover, people in landscapes that are under threat as well as people of landscapes that had already been destroyed and that might be renatured again in the fututre, can learn from each other`s history.
