It is one of the oldest museums in Germany, because its forerunner (Museum Rheinisch-Westfälischer Alterthümer) was already founded in 1874. The museum was extensively renovated from 1998 to 2003 and in part again in 2010. The museum displays mainly finds from the pre- and early history. The section "Stone Age Area" features the original Neanderthal skeleton and follows the prehistory to the Celtic culture in central Europe.
