Bukhara Ark submitted by DrewParsons : The Zindon prison pit is built behind the walls at this point. (Vote or comment on this photo)
Ancient city walls surround the 2500 year old settlement known as the Ark in Bukhara, Uzbekistan. The present walls were first constructed around 850 AD and have been repaired over the ages although some foundation sections of the original walls still exist.

The walls enclose the Ark which was the original settlement dated to around 500 BC but is now largely a rubble mound although extensive rebuilding of some structures over the entire history of the site and some modern restoration has occurred. These include the entrance gate and adjacent walls and the infamous Zindon underground prison pit featured in the October 1996 photo opposite.
