The dimensions of the entire cemetery are not known. Several urns were discovered during the construction of the modern cemetery Westfriedhof already in the late 19th century. Unfortunately, nothing is known about their number or appearence. The known part of the Bronze Age cemetery was discovered during the construction of Südring highway. Most of the urns have been found in the sandpit for moulding sand at Donnerberg hill.
The origin of the name Donnerberg is a matter of debate. It could be derived from the god Donar (Thor) or, alternatively, from `Damm (Dyke)` because the hill displays a pronounced ridge.
The urns show strong influences of the Niederrheinischen Grabhügelkultur („Lower Rhine tumulus culture“). They display different types of shape and decorations.
Therefore, the Urnenfeld am Südring cemetery exhibits similarities to the Bronze Age barrow cemeteries of Gladbeck-Ellinghorst, Borken-Marbeck and Gelsenkirchen-Buer-Schievenfeld. The enclosures of the barrows were not well preserved. Some outlines can possibly be interpreted as Schlüssellochgraben-type ("keyhole-type").
Today, nothing can be seen at the original site (see coordinates at the top of the page) anymore. Several urns are displayed in the Museum für Ur- und Ortsgeschichte in Bottrop.
