Gräberfeld Lilienthalstraße
Gräberfeld Lilienthalstraße submitted by Harald_Platta : The Gräberfeld Lilienthalstraße is a barrow cemetery in Essen and Mühlheim an der Ruhr (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). The Gräberfeld Lilienthalstraße is a barrow cemetery in Essen and Mühlheim an der Ruhr (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). It was used from the late Bronze Age to the early Iron Age.

The site is divided by the eponymous Lilenthalstraße street. The part west of the street lies in the region of the city border between Essen and Mühlheim an der Ruhr. Here, the first parts of the cemetery were already discovered in the early 20th century. Unfortunately, the finds and reports were lost in World War II. This part of the cemetery is supposed to have contained at least 20 urns und several places with high concentrations of charcoal, suggesting cremation or ritual sites.

The eastern part of the cemetery was systematically excavated in 2002, when the construction of a car park was planned. This part of the cemetery contained at least 12 barrows. The finds indicate, that the cemetery was used by the Niederrheinische Grabhügelkultur.

It is assumed, that yet undiscoverd parts of the cemetery are located south of the A52 highway.

Today, the barrows are not visible anymore. However, a 3D reconstruction of the site was made by the project Archäologische RuhrZeiten and can now be seen at Google Earth.
