The Gräberfeld Gladbeck-Ellinghorst is a Bronze Age cemetery in Gladbeck (North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany). It was discovered in 1936, when houses for coal miners were built. 203 burials have been described. However, not the entire cemetery was excavated. The estimated area of about 6 ha could have contained more than 400 burials.
Most of the individual burial sites were relatively simple. Only three of them were surrounded by ditches: Enclosure I is a key-hole grave (Schlüssellochgrab), Enclosure II has a round ditch with a diameter of 16 m and Enclosure III has a round ditch with a diameter of 6.6 m.
The 203 detected burials included 132 urns. The urns display a broad variation of different types of shapes and ornamentation, like the urns from the cemetery at Bottrop Donnerberg . Nearly all burials contained only a single urn. Moreover, most burials contained no grave goods or additional vessels. Among the few grave goods were amber pearls, a razor and tweezers.
The other burials either included cremated remains that had been separated from the charcoal or represented a mixture of cremated reamains and charcoal.
At seven sites, pieces of pottery without human remains were found. They could represent emtpy graves or possibly ceremonial places. Two additional sites contained 0.3 m and 0.6 m thick layers of charcoal, indicating that they were possible ritual sites.
Today, nothing can be seen at the original site (see coordinates at the top of the page) anymore. Several urns are stored and occasionally displayed in the Stadtmuseum Gladbeck.
