Each of the eight stones carries the name of the historical juryman. The stones are arranged in a half-circle. The court table and the seat of the judge lie in the center. The whole site is surrounded by a hedge. Each of the two entrances is marked with a marker stone.
It has been proven that the court site was used already in the 14th century. It has lost this function in the late 18th century. The original court stone table was destroyed by British soldiers in 1945.
The Femeiche is 11 m high. Originally, it had measured 18 m, until parts of the treetop broke in 1927. It has a circumference of about 14 m. This makes it the thickest oak tree in Germany. The treetop has a diameter of 8 m.
The age of the Femeiche itself can only be guessed, because the central part of the trunk is largely destroyed. The different attempts mainly point to an age of about 850 years. The minimal age is assumed by some researchers to be 600 years, while others propose an age of 1000, 1300 or even 1500 years.
It is interesting to note, that the alternative names Rabenseiche or Ravenseiche may point to an old thing site by refering to Odin`s ravens. However, even an age of "only" 850 years would make the Femeiche the oldest oak tree in Germany.
