The barrow is about 2 metres high,
with a diameter of about 30 metres.
It's related to the final neolithic Einzelgrabkultur (Single Grave culture).
The barrow was excavated and examined in the years 1935 and 1936 by the local school director Grünewald. At that time some cremated bones without an urn were found. Most probably these bones originally had been packed in a bag (or the like) that was not preserved.
Later the barrow was reused. So 3 urn graves from latest Bronze age or earliest Iron age were found above the neolithic burial.
After the excavation the barrow was flattened due to exploitation of sand and gravel.
However a few years ago Galgenberg has been reconstructed, a few metres north of its original location.
A similar barrow (height about 1 m, diameter about 30 m) had been situated some metres south of Galgenberg. But it was destroyed in the Twenties.
East and south of Galgenberg about 400 cremation burials have been discovered. Two thirds of them were urn graves, one third were so-called "Knochenlager" (unsure translation: "Bone rests" or "Bone layers") without urns. This large cemetery, covering an area of about 2800 x 800 metres, was used between about 1300 and 300 BC.
The Galgenberg's name seems to indicate a later using as an execution site. But in this case I don't think so. I suppose the name is just based on a false assumption of the locals. Probably they derived the name from another mound (nowadays covered by the town hall of Oberhausen) that actually had been used as a court site.
