Ancient Settlement in Rogaland

This settlement site consists of a three foundation marks from iron age buildings, it is a part of a ring-shaped settlement with several housings oriented in a circle much like the settlements at Vollmoen and Dysjaland and several other Iron Age settlement sites known in Norway. The site is located on a large natural terracce overlooking the river and with the larger Ritland barrow cemetery on the upper terrace to the north west.

The south west part of the settlement has long since been erased by plowing of the nearby field and a small stone fence that marks the border of the plowed area goes from north east to south west and crosses over one of the remaining housings. It is unknown how many buildings the settlement originally consisted of but it has been guessed around 8 to 12 buildings.

The three remaining housings are visible as elongated depressions in the ground and some very low wall markings running parallel with the depressions. The houses are of similar size, 12 metres in length, around 4-6 metres wide and around 40cm deep in the ground. They are oriented next to each other in a small semi-circle.

The site also consists of three very pretty round barrows on a small line from the settlement to the north west. The round barrows have diametres of 12, 18 and 17 metres and they are 1, 1,25 and 1,75 metres in height. They have a very nice rounded shape with no visible craters or plundering scars. Some parts of a stone ring are visible around the edges of the smalles round barrow.

The settlement can clearly be seen in connection with the large and impressive Ritland barrow cemetery to the north located on a higher terrace while the settlement are on the lower terrace.
