The rock consists of red sand stone. The name Düwelsteen ("Devil`s Stone") may indicate that it might have been used as a pagan sanctuary, because these places were often associated with the devil in christian times.
The Düwelsteen is also called von Eichendorff rock because the third verse from his poem Abschied were chiseled into the stone in the early 20th century.
