Rock Art in Hordaland

Sledasteinen is one of the sites that I really had on my personal wish list since I had tried to find it 3 times before but without getting to it and finally I got to visit it! They just constructed a tiny road that was driveable passing around 50 metres to the east of the stone. Driving up the tiny mountain dirt road was a challenge itself!

The site consists of a huge natural boulder. It is 6.5 metres in height and 5,3 metres wide at the base. The top has moss and 3 cover. On the west side of the boulder, the site that is turned to the valley have lot of natural overhangs. Between the overhangs are many carved figures. The rock carvings are the typical bronze age agricultural carvings however the collection of figures have a unusual large number of humans where all seems to be "dancing". This has lead to a theory that the rock art site have been an important cultural site.
There are two natural overhangs on the stone. The top overhang is around 2 metres above ground level and the bottom around 1 metre. One the upper overhang is a line of several human "stick figures". They have legs spread and arms up and it has been percieved as dancing people. On the lower overhang there are many carvings and some stands out as boats or spiral figures.

There are no clear figures on the lower part of the stone block, they can only be observed on closer inspection. On the boulders left side of the petroglyph surface there is water seepage. Trees and other shrubs grow on top of the rock. There is also some lichen on the stone, but the petroglyph field is little affected by the it. A quartz vein can be seen in the right part of the field. On the east side there is a smaller stone block and leans towards the field, between this stone and the field there is a passage that you can crawl through if you want. Directly in front of the stone is a higher escarpment that blocks the view from the field. The field was previously registered with a somewhat different figure number.

From kulturminnesøk:
In all there are 43 human figures, 7 boats, 2 ring or spiral figures and 2 collections with carvings marks. Later surveys count 35 people and 5 boats and the same number of other figures. The reason why not all the human figures could be found is that they must have been carved into an area where figures are carved over and above each other. It thus became extremely difficult to distinguish individual figures. One of Bakka's defined human figures was interpreted by us as a tree, this figure has also been interpreted by Mandt as a tree. In addition to the listed figures, a number of chopping marks can also be seen on the field. During the documentation, 16 indeterminate figures were registered, several of which are probably Bakka's human figures. During the fieldwork, several new figures were also discovered, including a new boat, and a number of lines and carving marks. This number of figures is what was recorded in the field during the fieldwork in 2003.
