Barrow Cemetery in Rogaland
The Iron age barrow cemetery at ritland with almost 50 barrows is the largest barrow cemetery in Rogaland county.
The cemetery is on a large grassy field just north of the river Suldalslågen.
The cemetery have been dated to have been in use from around 300AD to around 1000AD. In earlyer years there were several large barrow also a little to the north on both sides of the main road going west-east. Today there can be seen three large round barrows and one small barrow just next to the road but many have been lost in later years.
The barrows at the main cemetery is mostly round barrows, they range in size from 5 to 20 metres across and around 1-4 metres in height. Several barrows have very nice rounded shapes and look undisturbed. They are overgrown with short grass and only a few larger trees on and around the barrows, making them easy to see and photograph. Some of the barrows have larger trees growing on top of them.
On the lower natural sand terracee overlooking the river was found the remains of a circle-shaped settlement much similar with the one at Klauhauane in Sola. it was discovered in 1975.
Today the cemetery has been circled with electrical cattle fences. Unfortunately I was not able to get closer to the site and photograph each individual barrow, I had to stay out of the field and photograph on a distance. The barrows are easily visible on the photos, even no close-up photo was possible. Visitors should ask at the neighbour farms before crossing the electrical fence!
